Background: It is increasingly important that physicians have a thorough understanding of the basic science of human genetics and the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) associated with genetic testing and counseling.

Methods: The authors developed a series of web-based courses for medical students on these topics. The course modules are interactive, emphasize clinical case studies, and can easily be incorporated into existing medical school curricula.

Results: Results of a ‘real world’ effectiveness trial indicate that the courses have a statistically significant effect on knowledge, attitude, intended behavior and self-efficacy related to genetic testing (p

Conclusions: The results indicate that this curriculum is an effective tool for educating medical students on the ELSI associated with genetic testing and for promoting positive changes in students’ confidence, counseling attitudes and behaviors.

VISION: Remote Standardized Patients will enhance current skills training education and provide medical students with a novel mode of experiential learning.

MISSION: Through the incorporation of remote (off-site) Standardized Patients within on-line educational modules, we aim to provide more innovative, interactive skills training in a unified resource. The innovation is focused on the creation of remote Standardized Patients as training elements, an enhancement over the current assessment only use.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The target audience for our concept is medical school educators.

GOAL: The value of Standardized Patients is well established in medical schools; however they typically are used for assessment and via a “live” experience. Thus, we investigate an innovative method of extending an Internet based Standardized Patient as a learning tool to the field of on-line skills training. We will measure the value of Standardized Patients integrated into the learning and skills training.

SOLUTION: We propose to create and evaluate a skills-training experience for medical students that will be available via the Internet and will utilize remote Standardized Patients. This experiential learning experience will go beyond the usual boundaries of interactive distance/on-line learning. The remote interview will allow students to practice interview skills and receive the benefit of Standardized Patient interactions in their learning, without increasing the burden on the medical school. The Standardized Patient interview will coordinate with educational modules and be both an enhancement of the learning and an assessment opportunity for the faculty. Each educational module will include an Internet-based Standardized Patient component, which will give medical students a more realistic approach to diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Opioid dependence and treatment with buprenorphine are topics well suited to teach medical students about the role of practicing physicians in substance abuse treatment, complicated multi-disciplinary treatment issues, complex biological and social basis of addictions, and how new treatments are developed and moved into practice. During Phase I of the grant, we developed a curriculum plan for a suite of modules on these issues as they relate to opioid abuse and dependence with input from a focus group of medical school professionals with experience in substance abuse education. The prototype module entitled “Prevalence, Trends and Impact on Health: Opioid Addiction” was developed and underwent usability and pilot testing with medical students in their 2nd through 4th years of study. Usability testing revealed that students enjoyed the online format, found the module well-organized and easy to navigate, and showed an interest in learning more about Buprenorphine. More in-depth pilot testing assessed the impact of the pilot module on the attitudes, self-efficacy, and intendedbehavior of medical students, as well as changes in knowledge and satisfaction with the module material. A retrospective pre/post design was regarding detecting and treating opioid misuse or abuse significantly increased with the completion of the pilot module.
