Join Clinical Tools on a novel project to investigate one of the most radical tools to improve medical education since the introduction of the Standardized Patient – 3D immersive virtual reality based training. Our project is just one example of how this technology makes accessible what was previously hard if not impossible to teach.

How good is your own internal map of the brain? How well can you visualize the nodes and pathways inside the brain, or do you just remember them? Now compare that to how well you know a house you visited, or a town? We build internal 3D models of things by experiencing 3D environments. Prior to Oculus-type solutions, this was simply impossible for most environments not experienced directly in the real world, such as the brain.

This project is about to change that. We're going to build VR Brain Exploration, a virtual world patterned after the real world brain that the student can explore. As the student explores s/he builds an internal 3D map s/he can use to understand brain-based processes (emotion, memory) illness (aphasia, addiction), and pharmacological effects (phentermine, buprenorphine). A better understanding of the brain will enhance enthusiasm of students to pursue future studies and further enhance their knowledge of the brain functioning.

We seek a range of consultants as we build VR Brain Exploration. Specific expertise needed includes

CTI has successfully engaged hundreds of consultants in prior projects. Consultants are compensated for their time. Time commitment can vary, ranging from a quick review to a more in-depth contribution, according to your interests and availability.

Consultants will be listed in our proposal along with consultant-provided basic information regarding area of expertise and specialty. For now, we only need an electronic signature on an agreement form, along with a letter of support (more information below), and biosketch. All information provided is kept strictly confidential.

What is VR Brain Exploration? VR Brain Exploration is a proposed virtual reality brain simulation tool designed to aid medical student understanding of the pathways that underlie addiction and other mental health disorders.
What is the purpose of VR Brain Exploration?

VR Brain Exploration is intended to enhance treatment of patients in addiction and other mental health treatment by equipping medical students with a deep understanding of the complex pathways that underlie brain-based disorders.

Many people and companies are creating "games" that feature brains. The major difference Clinical Tools, Inc. proposes is that this game is accurate and useful. I want students to build an accurate [as possible given the knowledge we have] 3D model of brain anatomy and connections.


What are possible benefits of this product? VR Brain Exploration's use of the Oculus Rift® virtual reality headset will enable medical students to develop a 3-dimensional understanding of the brain and its complex organization through tracing processes along neural pathways to different regions of the brain.
What is the long term goal of this product? To provide future physicians with a deeper understanding of brain mechanisms compared to existing teaching tools and be able to close the gap in treatment effort and effectiveness of brain-based illnesses versus other medical conditions.
What is the 3D Visualization Approach?

Clinical Tools' strength is education and training of students or practicing health professionals. VR Brain Exploration's focus is thus on educational outcomes that would be measurable and useful to health professional students. Via a "gamification" of a 3D brain map the student learner would navigate through a 3D space. The data defining that space would include regions and connections determined by established knowledge and fiber track pathways as shown via potential use of 3D Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.

As a learning game, the student would get challenges (Find the ___, See if you can get to the __ without running into the ___). The experience would also include "tests" for in-game evaluation of skills (Try and get back to the ___).


Does this study have IRB approval? We are in the process of applying for IRB approval at this time. Typically, low risk educational activities like this where we will simply collect anonymous feedback and conduct educational assessments are considered exempt.
What is Oculus Rift®?
What is Oculus Rift®? Oculus Rift® is a virtual reality headset intended for use to create 3D experiences, such as in education or games. This device uses tracking technology to provide 360 degree head tracking, allowing its user to "look around" a virtual world the way he or she would in real life.
Do you need a game console to use Oculus Rift®? Oculus Rift® is a self-contained unit that functions independently from gaming consoles.
What hardware do you need to use Oculus Rift®? Oculus Rift® works with a computer. Most institutions have a computer that would work with Oculus. We would work with your IT department on this and/or supply the needed computer during the testing period.
